<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Hello out there in blog land! I'm still here, knitting, spinning, and sidling uneasily around my loom. I've dusted off my sewing machine, and I'm attempting to teach myself to sew. So far I've made two pairs of pyjama pants, a failed cotton summer top, and a gazillion bags.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">
I've found a new craft group which meets every fortnight at the local library, and every other fortnight at one of the ladies homes. This is a great excuse for morning tea, and is bringing me back to the joys of baking. I haven't really baked much since I moved north, as I would've had to eat it all, and although there is no doubt I would enjoy that, my waistline would not. So spurred on by an opportunity to bake new things, I've delved through my recipes, and bought a few new cooking utensils, biscuit trays, and one of those new fandangled floppy silicone loaf tins. (Tins? It's floppy silicone, not tin. What do you call those things?)

So here begins my tale of caution.

This morning I thought I'd make some banana bread, as it's really good eaten whilst still warm from the oven, and the crusty bits on the outside (the best bits - am I right?) tend to go soft if baked the day before. So I mixed the batter, splodged it into the shiny new tin (loaf pan?), and bunged it in the oven. It takes a good 40 - 50 minutes to bake, so I hopped into the shower. By the time I emerged from the bathroom, things were starting to smell pretty good. But what was that slight burning smell? I opened the oven to investigate, and to my horror, the floppy tin (container?), had decided to do just that. Flop. The uncooked batter had seen an opportunity to escape, oozed out of the tin (baking thing?) and all over the bottom of the oven, where it was happily burning itself to a crisp. Cue the smoke alarm. This began a frenzy of flapping a tea towel at the alarm to shut it up, convincing the tin to stand up (if it was tin it wouldn't have betrayed me like this), flapping a tea towel at the alarm, trying to scrape up as much of the burning batter as I could off the bottom of the oven, ripping the battery out of the smoke alarm (shut UP damn you!), burning myself on an oven rack, and saying quite a few unladylike words.

Surprisingly, what was left of the banana bread was quite tasty, and completely devoured at morning tea. So now I'm off to go scrub my oven. Anyone want a silicone loaf tin?Knitspingirlhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06665104080376511244noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8307402317746431922.post-52849333139336384752015-01-07T21:32:00.001+11:002015-01-07T21:32:06.731+11:00I'm not using the "R" word.
A new year inevitably leads to thinking of new year's res...
No. I will not use the "R" word! If I use that word, we all know what happens next. A month or two of being good, and then everything goes to pot.

What I would like to happen, is to finally finish the UFO's that are taking up so much space in my loungeroom. There's a queen sized blanket awaiting it's final border, a 4ply cardigan needing a hood and half a sleeve, a jumper for my dad with only the back done, a cute little sock yarn shawl which is taking forever, and a handspun BSJ that just needs seams and buttons.

That seems achievable ... I hope?

I'd also like to dust off my sewing machine. Maybe make a skirt or two? I've also been thinking more and more about quilting. I've only ever made a sampler cot sized quilt before, many many moons ago. I loved the piecing together, but hated the way the teacher insisted we quilted "stitch in the ditch". I can stitch just about anywhere but there!

Oh, and then there's the 4 shaft loom sitting on the bed in the stash room. And the virtual mountain of scrummy fibres waiting to be spun ...

What are your crafty plans for this year?

Nice long staples, if a little grubby. It's been YEARS since I've prepped a fleece for spinning from scratch! I'd also forgotten how long it takes.

Very satisfying, though. Taking it through the processes, from washing, drying, and running it through my drum carder (multiple times for a really nice result). I'm really pleased with how my squishy batts are coming out - sooooo different from what I started with! They should be a dream to spin.

I've knitted and ripped, knitted and ripped, and knitted and ripped. I've spent the last week knitting up some really yummy handspun, and I've really enjoyed knitting with it. I should knit with my handspun more often! However I haven't been entirely happy with the gauge, and as I've been knitting, I've been thinking about frogging it so I could use a larger needle.

I'm knitting a (quite large) top down triangular shawl with a patterned edge. I've just screwed up the lace pattern, and don't think I want to bother fixing it.

Blah.

I really like knitting. I enjoy spinning because it lets me play with yummy fibres, and results in yarn I can knit with. Weaving? Not so much.

And then someone gave me a loom. A rigid heddle loom to be precise. I sidled round it all last year warily, and then took the plunge. My first attempt at a scarf wasn't toooo bad. Learning from my mistakes, I tried again.
I have now gone out and bought more heddles for my loom, so I can weave any thickness of yarn my little heart desires. I'm hooked!

PS - Please pardon my absence for the last few months, both myself AND a beloved family member moved houses. I don't want to hear the words "cardboard boxes" or "packing" for a loooong loooong time! It was totally worth it though - I am so much happier in my new home.Knitspingirlhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06665104080376511244noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8307402317746431922.post-38599312252892975812013-10-29T23:12:00.001+11:002013-10-29T23:12:03.512+11:00Back to socks
Just lately, everything I try to knit turns to crap. Dumb mistakes, poor yarn/pattern choices, and sheer bloody-mindedness have all taken their toll on my knitting confidence.

For example, I've dropped stitches in a plain shawl and have been completely unable to pick them up. In fact, trying to fix it made it sooooo much worse. That shawl then came out much, much smaller than I'd have liked. And the final straw (this is where the bloody-mindedness comes in) is a pale blue cardigan which is too rough (it's baby yarn! ), at some point in the yarns life the outside of the balls have been bleached by the sun which is only obvious when you're not looking at it in my lounge rooms craptastic lighting (I do 99% of my knitting there), my tension is all over the place, I've just found a boo-boo that means I'll have to frog back most of the second front, but I'm NOT GOING TO LET IT BEAT ME!!! I will win. I'm about 80% done! However it does need to sit in the naughty basket until my urge to cut it up into itty bitty bits subsides.

In the meantime, there are socks. I haven't knitted socks for almost six months, but it feels like time. Short socks (therefore quick), easy socks (familiar & comfortable), and yarn that's pretty, but not precious. Just socks.

Knitspingirlhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06665104080376511244noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8307402317746431922.post-67546432221095355722013-10-07T22:54:00.001+11:002013-10-07T22:54:09.252+11:00Handspun squishy goodness
I decided to take a break from knitting my current cardigan project (4 ply, scratchy, bleach spots on the yarn from the sun - grrr). Don't feel like knitting socks (gasp!), can't find a shawl pattern that grabs me.

Time to go stash-diving.

I came up with a handspun 100g 5 ply-ish skein in a pretty red/green colourway. I'll admit, I didn't really think about how it was dyed before I spun it. It was basically large splodges of green and red with a smidge of yellow on a white roving. I just spun it how it came and plyed it with itself. It turned out as a really pretty skein and is soft, soft, soft.

Some searching on Ravelry's pattern database yielded a suitable pattern for a slouchy hat with matching fingerless mitts, and I cast on!

I'm now halfway through the second mitt, with the hat all finished. There's a problem though. The way I spun the yarn means it's not consistently coloured all the way through. The second mitt is quite a different colour from everything else. It's really too late to do anything about it now. (sigh) So here's hoping it won't sit in my market bag forever.

I must be - I've knitted three of the things! It's a lovely pattern - all in garter stitch, with 42 "teeth" down one side as a nod to Douglas Adams' "Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy" where the answer to Life, the Universe and Everything is (you guessed it) 42.

I needed a change, so I hopped onto Ravelry to search out new patterns to try. Did you know there are variations on the Hitchhiker scarf out there?! There are Hitchhands (mittens), Hitchhat (speaks for itself), and a very cleverly named Mostly Warmness (cowl & fingerless mitts set). They all have the trademark Hitchhiker teeth. I decided to try a Hitchhat.

Four ply yarn, 3mm needles, knitted on the bias with beginning & end grafted together seamlessly. Pretty!

The more I knit this, the more I like it. BUT. The more I knit, the more I suspect my gauge is off. The more I knit, the smaller I think this hat is going to be. No, no (la la la la la!) it'll be fine ... knit knit knit. Gee it really is looking small ... knit knit knit. Maybe I should frog it & start again ... knit knit knit. I'm definitely going to frog it & start again ... knit knit knit.

Now I only have two "teeth" left until I'm up to grafting it together ... knit knit knit!

Maybe I can block it bigger. Blocking fixes everything. Right?

(Always love it when she visits!) During one of our many visits to the shops, she tried on a knitted beret. After reminding her of what I did (I'm a KNITTER!!), I plunked her down in front of the computer on Ravelry & told her to choose something she liked. She chose this:

Delighted that she had actually asked me to make her something, I dove into the stash & came out with a really yummy merino/silk blend in cream. This yarn is sooooo soft. (I will call him Squishy, and he will be my Squishy.) I was a little worried that it was knitting up too small, but when I gave it a little bath before blocking, it grew! It went from being bread & butter plate size, to draping over a dinner plate. I think it's gorgeous, and after a quick trip in the post, I hope my darling daughter does too. I had a tv which needed a new home, so with the help of my Dad I packed the car & off I set!

I was assisted in not getting lost by a borrowed GPS doohickey. I called him "Tom." I swore at him sometimes when he tried to take me dumb "scenic" routes, but we got there in the end.

Just south of Childers, puttering away at 110 kpm (the speed limit), I spotted a tip-turkey on the side of the road. It was spooked by an oncoming car & being fairly dim-witted, flapped towards my car. Oh no. Flap tip-turkey, FLAP! Unfortunately it didn't achieve the necessary thrust or lift and:

I swear that's just what it looked like. I couldn't stop to see if it was ok, but in my rear-view mirror I was very glad to see it flap drunkenly into the bushes. (In my special little world, that means it's ok.)

I spent a lovely few days with family & thankfully had a reasonably uneventful trip home. (Where are you taking me, Tom?) Although I do have a rather nice scratch on my windscreen where the tip-turkey did it's "beak-plant."

What's a tip-turkey? One of these:
Yay!!

A gorgeous friend of mine D, and her hubby S are attending the Mind Body Spirit Festival in Brisbane in a month or so. They have been told that whilst loading and unloading at the beginning and end of the festival, they must wear safety gear. Fluro vests and the like. Well, I was in my local Spotty store and came across some nuclear, radioactive yellow acrylic yarn. So bright it looks like it glows in the dark. (It doesn't, but I think it'd be kinda cool if it did!) I thought a couple of gag gifts were in order.
Escargot. This one's for D. Again a really pretty pattern, just not in this yarn. I think I'll have to make this one again. In nice yarn.

I've been teasing my long suffering friends with hints of gag gifts, and photos of eye-searingly yellow knitting for weeks. I'm pleased to say they went down a treat with D. I sent her home with both hats, but haven't heard anything yet about what S thinks of his. I hope he laughs. That was the whole point of the excersise for me - making lovely people laugh.Knitspingirlhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06665104080376511244noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8307402317746431922.post-3458944127999488932013-04-22T22:22:00.002+10:002013-04-22T22:22:49.917+10:00Secret Knitting ...Lots of secret knitting has been happening here, so I don't have much to show you in case the intended recipients drop in and spoil the surprise. Here's a teaser:
I loved making that one so much I immeadiately made another one! So much fun - and quite fast, too.

I've also nearly finished a 5ply cardi for me. Just half a sleeve and the pocket linings to go! I'm a little nervous the sleeves are going to be a little on the snug side. I can fix that when I block it, right? Right???Knitspingirlhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06665104080376511244noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8307402317746431922.post-5648788830505803002013-04-06T18:31:00.001+11:002013-04-06T18:31:30.996+11:00Teapot needs a jumper.I decided to do a little something nice the other day and have a pot of tea with real leaf tea. Just for a change, you know? It was really lovely, and seemed to taste so much nicer than my usual teabag. There was only one little problem as far as I could see ...
Yay!! So here's my finished blanket. It comfortably fits on a single bed (maybe a tad short) & as you can see, is the perfect summer knitting project. Lol!! Well, it worked fine until it came time to join them (knitted 3-needle bind-off join) and do the I-cord border All. The way. Around.

That's a lot of garter stitch! And I was bitten by the mitred crosses blanket bug so bad, I've started another one. This time in pink/blue/green/brown bordered in grey. Not loving it quite so much the second time around, which doesn't bode so well for the yarn I bought in a fit of MUST MAKE BLANKETS for a third one. Well, there was a sale, and there was this lonely looking yummy yarn, and my credit card kinda leapt into my hand, and ... I'm hopeless.

Oh! and for Christmas, my lovely friend D gave me a sheep doorstop (works - and looks - soooo much better than the pair of shoes I'd been using!!), and THIS:
Love it! She knows me so well. (Mwah! for you D!!)Knitspingirlhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06665104080376511244noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8307402317746431922.post-14566757840922442592013-01-17T23:31:00.000+11:002013-01-17T23:31:37.336+11:00Where did my mojo go?Hmmm ...

New year, big plans, my mojo flies out the window. (If you spot it, could you send it back?) Mind you, this horrible humid heat we've been having hasn't helped. I think my mum had the right idea - she wanted to be like a reverse bear & hibernate all summer. I much prefer snuggling up with my nice warm woolies to contemplating how to install myself permantly with a deck chair & my knitting in the dairy aisle in Woolies.

Blogger still doesn't want to play nice & let me upload piccies yet either. :'(

At least I've tried to keep up with "Fridays are for Spinning." I've spun up some lovely pale blue/grey merino with white silk slubs. I plyed it with some cornflower blue merino I had leftover from something else on one of my bobbins. (I need to spin some more 'cause I didn't have quite enough on the bobbin - lucky I had more roving.) Not sure if I really like it, but there you go. When I've finished that one then I can reward myself with something from the "yummy" pile!

As far as the knitting goes, it's all a big blah. After finishing the blankie (which I was obsessed with) I just can't seem to find anything that grabs me. Believe it or not, not even socks!Knitspingirlhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06665104080376511244noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8307402317746431922.post-21383916120108709042013-01-04T23:39:00.000+11:002013-01-04T23:39:37.794+11:00New year, new meA new year has arrived and I would dearly love to courageously tackle new challenges instead of doing my usual curl up on the couch with a yummy skein of yarn, a cup of tea, fingers in ears ... LALALALALA!!!

To that end, I hope to find a little bit of work. Just a day or two a week, nothing too stressful. If I can earn a bit of money whilst being useful somewhere, I think that'll help me feel a bit better about myself & less of a burden on society. I know, I'm on a disability pension for a reason, but still. I completed a business admin course part-time last year (yay!) so I'd like to put that new found knowledge to use.

I've also let some of my craft work slide, so I hereby reinstate "Fridays are for Spinning"!

And I'd like to learn a new skill with a little rigid heddle loom that came into my possession last year. I've acquired most of the missing pieces, so no more excuses!

I'd also like to finish off some of my long standing UFOs. I have at least one in the basket that I started two years ago. I don't have a PHD in knitting for nothing!! (Projects Half Done) Lol!!

Hmmm ... it seems Blogger isn't in the mood to let me upload photos at the moment. (Naughty Blogger!) I'll have to try again later. I've finished a blanket! (Yeah, yeah, I know. Perfect summer project. Rofl!!)Knitspingirlhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06665104080376511244noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8307402317746431922.post-21319010569833568422012-11-28T21:38:00.000+11:002012-11-28T21:38:19.075+11:00Yarn Guerillas vs Garden GuerillasMonday morning bright and early saw my fellow cohorts & I sneaking into a Guerilla garden & yarnbombing it.
I originally was making him for our next yarnbombing effort, but he took rather a long time to make and is just soooo adorable I don't think I want to give him up. My initial thought was to make a bunch of these with different coloured stripes, but it's rather a lot of work for something only 10 cm long.
I couldn't resist!)Knitspingirlhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06665104080376511244noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8307402317746431922.post-51502690867074060842012-10-18T20:29:00.002+11:002012-10-18T20:29:22.208+11:00Yay! It's a FO!!Hooray! I now have one less UFO. (Does that mean I get to start another one? Lol!)

This is an absolute cutie:

I just adore the little peas in their pods, the little stems on the pods, the tendrilly curls on the tip of the hood!!

Hmmm ... Blogger seems to want to flip this one sideways. Oh well.
I used 3 heart shaped shell buttons, with crochet loops. (Thanks Miss D for your advice, it really was much easier than the instructions made out!)

The only part I didn't really enjoy was sewing all the picot edging down. It has picots on every edge which adds to the cuteness factor, but I was soooo glad when it was all done.
Gorgeous pattern too - knitted all in one piece. Just a few stitches to graft at the shoulders & that was it. The top of the hood was done using a 3 needle bind off.
Love love love it!!!Knitspingirlhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06665104080376511244noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8307402317746431922.post-63834305047639677672012-10-11T17:15:00.001+11:002012-10-11T17:15:38.538+11:00StartitisI seem to be suffering from a bout of startitis. Normally I have two, three or sometimes even four projects on the go so I can chop & change between projects as the mood takes me. A travelling sock, a blanket I started nearly two years ago & maybe a cardigan or shawl.

I had a bit of a rude shock this week when I had to do the obligatory tidy-up for a routine rental inspection. Let's get the lounge chair-side projects tidied up so we don't freak out the real estate person too badly ... lol!!

Can you guess how many projects were hiding in there? Not four. Not six. Try doubling it. That's right - TWELVE!! Oh my goodness! What happened?!

This new addiction hasn't helped:

Mitred Crosses. Spotty has a new yummy yarn which is 25% silk 75% wool with scrummy long colour changes like Noro. I'm bordering it with some purple Bendi 8ply & I think I'm in love. It's ALL garter stitch which I thought would be brain meltingly boring, but I'm hooked. I should be finishing off some of my UFO's (including a baby cardi that I really want done in the next couple of weeks) but I'm utterly helpless to the charms of the Mitred Crosses. I'm seriously considering buying some more so I can make another blanket in a different colourway. (Just what I need on the approach to what is promised to be a pretty revoltingly hot & sticky summer - a third blanket project!)

Just one more square ...Knitspingirlhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06665104080376511244noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8307402317746431922.post-48082112526703960042012-09-15T21:47:00.000+10:002012-09-15T21:53:29.779+10:00Wooly outingToday my lovely friend Miss D & I represented the Lismore Spinners & Weavers in a demonstration & display of all things fibrey. Is that a word? If not, I declare it one now. (In my special little world anyway!)

The Cape Byron Rudolph Steiner School was having it's annual spring fair & we were invited to go along too.

They made us a sign!

We had a wonderful spot under a lovely big leafy tree, so we had shade all day. The weather was gorgeous - not a cloud in the sky.

It was just the two of us, which is all we thought we needed. Wrong! The place was PACKED! So between demonstrating spinning (I LOVE demonstrating spinning!), giving some free newbie spinning lessons (thanks Miss D!) and explaining what we had on display (shawls, hats, skeins, unusual fibres, crocheted garlands, felt) we were pretty much run off our feet.

Oh - and the box with the L plate? We made up some loo roll & paddle pop stick knitting nancys. I thought it'd be a cute idea, & it's something I've done before with the Victorian Spinners Guild with great results. Not so here unfortunately. Although they were free to anyone who wanted to learn, we didn't have many takers. Ah well, live & learn.

Oh - again? The wheel that bit me is the one in the front. It proved to be somewhat unco-operative. Maybe it's turned evil because it's tasted human blood ...Knitspingirlhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06665104080376511244noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8307402317746431922.post-36611150505690076582012-09-13T19:39:00.000+10:002012-09-13T19:39:22.596+10:00Baby thingsFinally my finger feels good enough to knit. Yay!
So I celebrated by whipping up this little cutie:

It's called Milo & it's constructed using one of my new favorite methods. Top down, in the round, & NO SEAMS!! Just darn in your beginning end, & your finishing end & you're done! Gotta love that. Although I didn't have time to block it nicely before it had to be given away.

I'm now working on another baby thing, this time Sweet Pea. It seems to be taking forever to get anywhere, so I hope I can finish it before bubby arrives. I think I've still got about 10 weeks up my sleeve, so that should be plenty. I was originally thinking of something else, but I found this book & nearly lost my mind with the cuteness. (Miss SJ? - I've lost your mobile number when my phone chucked a tanty & deleted my ENTIRE contacts list. Not happy!)
Knitspingirlhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06665104080376511244noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8307402317746431922.post-39005291752148175232012-09-07T19:24:00.000+10:002012-09-07T19:24:40.401+10:00Worst. Injury. Ever.Ok maybe not the worst ever.

I was cleaning up one of my Spinning Group's wheels in preparation for a demonstration outing at Cape Byron Steiner School next weekend, when the treadle flicked off it's hook & eye attachment, bending back my right index fingernail with it. Owww! I was quite surprised I didn't swear given the level of pain. I guess I was too busy curling my body protectively round it (& not breathing. At all.) I finally gained the courage to look at it, thinking the whole nail must have come off, or at least ripped substantially. The nail's still there - and in one piece! Miracle. There's a white line half-way up my nail where it folded (ouch) & quite a bit of blood at the time, but other than that - not much evidence of trauma. However it is VERY sore, & I appear to be somewhat of a slow learner.

Sigh, bored. I know, I'll knit! ... ow - bugger.
I'll send a friend an sms! ... ow - bugger.
I'll knit a sock! ... ow - bugger.
I'll open a can of soft drink as a treat! ... OW - bugger.
I'll knit a cardigan! ... ow - bugger.
How about some of blankie? He's soft! ... ow - bugger.
Oooo I know! I'll check my emails & surf the net for a while!! ... ow - bugger.
Maybe if I knit something small, like a flower ... ow - bugger.

You don't realise how much you use the tip of your index finger on your dominant hand until it hurts every time you do. Here's hoping my finger heals quickly. My knitting is a form of sanity saving for me & I'm not always a nice person to be around if I can't knit ...
(Just ask my beautiful daughter what I'm like when I'm in between projects!)Knitspingirlhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06665104080376511244noreply@blogger.com1
